Maximum Hackney Carriage Fare Structure

The Council sets the maximum hackney carriage (taxi) fare structure (for hirings beginning and ending within the East Lindsey District) and it is unlawful to charge a rate above that set by the Authority.

The Council cannot set a maximum fare structure for private hire vehicles.

A copy of the current maximum hackney carriage fare structure can be found under Related Documents on this webpage.

All hackney carriage vehicles licensed by the Council must be fitted with a taximeter. The taximeter, within the vehicle, must be set to display a fare not exceeding the maximum fare rate set by this Authority.

In February 2010 the Council's General Licensing Committee (consisting of Councillors) agreed to introduce a yearly review of the maximum hackney carriage fare structure. The purpose of the yearly review was to set aside a period each year when the taxi trade would be aware that the Council intended to look at taxi fares - all interested parties would then have their window of opportunity to say whether the fare structure should be varied. The Committee indicated that the fare review would usually take place in January or February each year.

Any proposed variation of the fare structure will be advertised by the Council in a local newspaper and a period of time allowed for objections.
