Information and links relating to Dementia

Memory Support Service

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with dementia, or mild cognitive impairment, the Lincolnshire Memory Support Service can offer information and guidance on how to live as well as possible with the diagnosis.

They can provide information and guidance relating to the diagnosis as well as support your carer and/or loved ones with how they can support you and themselves in the future.  The Memory Support Service works alongside community mental health teams, memory clinics and partner organisations across the county.

They support people in Lincolnshire with:

  • understanding the diagnosis and what this could mean for you and your carer or loved ones.
  • understanding the importance of planning for the future.
  • accessing the right support to enable you to live in the local community for as long as possible.
  • building resilience and confidence to manage the impact of the diagnosis.
  • identifying the range of support services available for someone with this diagnosis or for those who are supporting you.

Referrals can be accepted via the following routes.  You do not need to be referred by your GP or healthcare service as you can refer yourself - by email or by their Single Point of Access (SPA) calling telephone number 03031234000.

Dementia Friends

Dementia doesn't care who you are; it could affect us all. Because public understanding is so poor, people with dementia often feel - and are - misunderstood, marginalised and isolated. And that means that they're less likely to be able to live independently in their own communities.

We urgently need to create a climate of kindness and understanding, so that everyone affected by dementia feels part of, not apart from, society.

Becoming a Dementia Friend simply means finding out more about how dementia affects a person - and then, armed with this understanding, doing small everyday things that help. For example, being patient in a shop queue, or spending time with someone you know who's living with dementia.

Whether you attend a face-to-face Information Session or watch the online video, Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help.  If you would like a free Dementia Friends face to face Information Session please email Jane Berni.

Herbert Protocol and Smart Wristbands

The Herbert Protocol is a national scheme which has been launched in Lincolnshire and encourages carers and families to record vital information on a form which could be used in the event of a vulnerable person going missing.

A "smart" wristband can be issued to people living with dementia. The wristband stores the name and contact details of a wearer's next of kin so that if someone gets lost, police or members of the public can quickly access contact details by placing a mobile phone against the device. Please note, the wristband is not a tracker.

If you're a carer or relative of someone who is living with dementia you can request a wristband when you complete the Herbert Protocol form.

East Lindsey Dementia Friendly Community (DFC)

"A dementia-friendly community is a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported. Dementia-friendly communities are vital in helping people live well with dementia and remain a part of their community." (Alzheimer's UK)

In East Lindsey we have a network of individuals and organisations who are working together to improve things for people living with dementia. The priorities of the East Lindsey Dementia Friendly Community are to:

  • Ensure that information relating to dementia is available and shared effectively.
  • Improve the support, and access to support, for people living with dementia and their carers
  • Increase training and awareness about living with dementia across sectors and in the community.
  • Organise a range of activities locally, including ones for people living with dementia and ones to raise awareness.

We also have six dementia cafés in East Lindsey (see below for further details), these are sometimes known as memory cafés. Dementia Cafés provide a safe and welcoming space for those living with dementia and their carers. It is a place where they can socialise, find support and take part in a range of activities.
